BELOIT — People were dancing to the polka music and yodeling talents of the Zweifel Brothers Band, while others were enjoying Bavarian-style pretzels and conversation with neighbors on Saturday.
Crowds gathered on State Street for the 9th Annual Downtown Beloit Association Oktoberfest, which had people dancing in the street and sharing stories and beers.
Steve and Ashlee North were trying their hand at a game of Hammerschlagen. The couple from Rockford competed with friends in trying to hammer a nail into a tree stump using the pointed end of a hammer with each turn. In the end it was their friend Matt Hasseman of Poplar Grove who won the competition and claimed his prize of an ornate mug.
