BELOIT, Wis. — A project to demolish the building at 80-100 East Grand Ave. in downtown Beloit will begin its first phase next week, the City of Beloit announced Thursday.

The city said the planned public-private development involves the vacant structure that protrudes over the Rock River, which the DNR said must be removed by 2042, due to the extensive damage on its underwater portion.

The city said the building will be replaced with a scenic public riverwalk while future private development is planned for the site. Work will be completed on the interior of the building with no impacts to traffic, but a few parking stalls will be blocked off.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has awarded a grant to the City to assist in funding for the project. The demolition will decrease flood elevations upstream and promote outdoor recreation with the extension of the Rock River Trail and Downtown Riverwalk. City taxes are not being used to fund the project.
